Hugh M. Rigney

Hugh McPheeters Rigney (born July 31, 1873 in Arthur , Moultrie County , Illinois , †  October 12, 1950 in Springfield , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1939 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hugh Rigney attended the public schools in his home country and then completed an apprenticeship in the printing trade, in which he later worked as a journeyman. Between 1900 and 1925 he was a newspaper editor in his hometown Arthur. In 1910 and 1911 Rigney was also city treasurer there; from 1910 to 1916 he was a member of the local school committee. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1930 and 1934, and again in 1942, he served as their district chairman in Moultrie County. From 1935 to 1937 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives .

In the 1936 congressional election , Rigney was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Donald C. Dobbins on January 3, 1937 . Since he was not confirmed in 1938, he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1939 . During this time, further New Deal laws were passed by the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt .

Hugh Rigney worked in the real estate business between 1939 and 1943. Since September 15, 1943, he was employed in the office of the Secretary of State of Illinois. He stayed there until his death on October 12, 1950.
