Niels Juul

Niels Juul (born April 27, 1859 in Randers , Denmark , †  December 4, 1929 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1917 and 1921 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Niels Juul attended the public schools in his Danish homeland. In 1880 he came to Chicago, where he worked in publishing. After completing a law degree and being admitted to the bar in 1899, he began to work in this profession in Chicago. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1898 and 1914 he was a member of the Illinois Senate . From 1907 to 1911 he was also deputy public prosecutor.

In the 1916 congressional election , Juul was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the Seventh Constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Democrat Frank Buchanan on March 4, 1917 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1921 . World War I fell during his time in Congress . In addition, the 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution were ratified in 1919 and 1920 . In 1920 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

In 1921 and 1922, Niels Juul was Head of Customs at the Port of Chicago. After that he practiced as a lawyer again. He died in Chicago on December 4, 1929.
