Hiram Barber Jr. (born March 24, 1835 in Queensbury , Warren County , New York , †  August 5, 1924 in Lake Geneva , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1881 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1846, Hiram Barber came to Horicon , Wisconsin. He later studied at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . After studying law in Albany (New York) and being admitted to the bar in 1856, he began to work in this profession in Juneau (Wisconsin). Between 1861 and 1862 he was a District Attorney in Jefferson County ; in 1865 and 1866 he served as the Assistant Attorney General of Wisconsin. In 1866 he moved to Chicago where he practiced as a lawyer. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1878 Barber was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Lorenz Brentano on March 4, 1879 . Since he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party in 1880, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1881 .

Between 1881 and 1888, Hiram Barber worked in Mitchell in what was then the Dakota Territory , which is now part of the state of South Dakota , for the Receiver of the Land Office . He then returned to Chicago, where he practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1891 and 1914 he served as a Masters in Chancery for the Superior Court in Cook County . After that, he retired. Hiram Barber died on August 5, 1924 in Lake Geneva.
