Thomas Vernor Smith

Thomas Vernor Smith (born April 26, 1890 in Blanket , Brown County , Texas , †  May 24, 1964 in Hyattsville , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1941 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Smith attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1915 at the University of Texas at Austin . In 1922 he graduated from the University of Chicago . In between he served in the US Army in 1918 and 1919 during the final phase of the First World War . He then taught at various universities until 1948. He was also the author of numerous books. From 1931 to 1948 he edited the International Journal of Ethics . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1935 and 1938 he was a member of the Illinois Senate . In 1937 and 1938 he was also the chairman of the Illinois Legislative Council .

In the 1938 congressional election , Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 27th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Lewis M. Long on January 3, 1939 . Since he was not confirmed in 1940, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1941 . During this time, the last New Deal laws of the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt were passed.

During the Second World War he served again between 1943 and 1946 in the Army, in which he rose to the rank of colonel. Between November 1943 and November 1944 he was head of the Education Committee of the Allied Control Commission in Italy . After the war he taught at Syracuse University in New York State until 1959 . After that, he retired. Thomas Smith died in Hyattsville on May 24, 1964 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
