Everett J. Murphy

Everett Jerome Murphy (born July 24, 1852 in Nashville , Illinois , †  April 10, 1922 in Joliet , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1897 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In his youth, Everett Murphy moved with his parents to Sparta , where he attended public schools. In 1877 he worked as a city ​​clerk for the local city administration. He then moved to Chester , where he was employed by the court administration. At times he was also a sheriff in Randolph County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Murphy served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1886 to 1888 . He then headed the Menard Detention Center . From 1892 he lived in East St. Louis .

In the 1894 congressional election , Murphy was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 21st  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded John C. Black on March 4, 1895 . Since he was not confirmed in 1896, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1897 . From 1897 to 1899, Murphy served on his state's pardon committee. Between 1899 and 1913, and then from 1917 until his death, he ran the prison in Joliet. He also got into the banking industry. Everett Murphy died in Joliet on April 10, 1922.
