Harold Himmel Velde

Harold Himmel Velde (born April 1, 1910 in Parkland , Tazewell County , Illinois , †  September 1, 1985 in Sun City , Arizona ) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1957 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harold Velde attended the public schools of his home country and studied from 1927 to 1929 at Bradley University in Peoria and then until 1931 at Northwestern University in Evanston . Between 1931 and 1935 he was a teacher and track and field coach at Hillsdale Community High School . After studying law at the University of Illinois and his admission to the bar in 1937, he began working in this profession in Pekin . In 1942 and 1943, he served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II . Between 1943 and 1946 he worked for the FBI for counter-espionage and sabotage . From 1946 to 1949 he was a district judge in Tazewell County.

Politically, Velde joined the Republican Party . In the 1948 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 18th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Edward H. Jenison on January 3, 1949 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1957 . During this time, the Cold War began , the Korean War and, domestically, the beginning of the civil rights movement . From 1953 to 1955 he headed the Committee on Un-American Activities .

In 1956 Velde renounced another candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer in Urbana and Washington. In 1969 he became a regional advisor to the General Services Administration in Lansing . From 1974 he lived in Sun City, where he died on September 1, 1985.
