The Bettenhöhle is a karst cave on Melchsee-Frutt in the municipality of Kerns in the canton of Obwalden . A total length of 30,022 meters has been explored from the cave system. This makes it the fifth longest cave in Switzerland . The system covers an altitude difference of 804 meters. The cave was explored by the Höhlenforscher-Gemeinschaft Trüssel (HGT) and since 2003 by the Höhlenforscher-Gemeinschaft Unterwalden (HGU).

location

The bed cave is located in the karst area of ​​Melchsee-Frutt. This is 15 km² and lies in an altitude range between 1100  m above sea level. M. and 2700  m above sea level. M. The cave system has multiple inputs, including an entrance near the eponymous Bettenalp at 1,819  m above sea level. M. On March 30, 2002 a merger with the Boniloch was discovered, the entrance of which is on the Bonistock at an altitude of 2083  m above sea level. M.

Together with the neighboring caves Schrattenhöhle , Neotektonikhöhle, Chrummegghöhle, Frutthöhle and about 130 other caves, this results in a cave area with a total of 59 kilometers, which is the third largest cave area in Switzerland .
