William Kellogg (1859)

William Kellogg (born July 8, 1814 in Kelloggsville , Ashtabula County , Ohio , †  December 20, 1872 in Peoria , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1863 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Kellogg attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his license to practice law, he began to work in this profession in Canton, Illinois. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1849 and 1850 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives ; from 1850 to 1855 he was a judge. Politically, he joined the Republican Party founded in 1854 .

In the congressional elections of 1856 , Kellogg was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded James Knox on March 4, 1857 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1863 . Until 1861 these were shaped by the events in the immediate run-up to the civil war and then by the war itself.

Between 1865 and 1867, William Kellog served as Chief Justice in the Nebraska Territory . He then headed the Peoria Financial District until 1869. He then went to the state of Mississippi as a judge for some time . After the re-admission of this state to the Union, he ran unsuccessfully for Congress. Soon afterwards he returned to Peoria, where he died on December 20, 1872.
