Scott Wike

Scott Wike (born April 6, 1834 in Meadville , Pennsylvania , †  January 15, 1901 in Barry , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 and again from 1889 to 1893 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1838 Scott Wike moved to Quincy , Illinois with his parents . Six years later the family moved to Pike County . Until 1856 he attended Lombard University in Galesburg . After studying law at Harvard University and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in Pittsfield in 1859 . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1863 and 1867 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives .

In the congressional election of 1874 , Wike was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Robert M. Knapp on March 4, 1875 . Since he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party in 1876, which instead put up Knapp again, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1877 . In the following years, Wike practiced as a lawyer again. In the elections of 1888 he was re-elected to Congress in the twelfth district of his state, where he replaced George A. Anderson on March 4, 1889 . After re-election, he could remain in the US House of Representatives until March 3, 1893. In 1892 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

Between 1893 and 1897, Scott Wike served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury during President Grover Cleveland's second term . After that he worked again as a lawyer. At that time he also went to England to study British income tax law. He was concerned with the question of whether this could be transferred to the United States.
