Napoleon Bonaparte Thistlewood (born March 30, 1837 in Harrington , Delaware , †  September 15, 1915 in Cairo , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1908 and 1913 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Napoleon Thistlewood attended public schools in his homeland. In 1858 he moved to Mason , Illinois, where he worked in commerce. During the civil war he served as a captain in the Union army . After the war he continued his activities in Mason. He later moved to Cairo, where he worked in the commission business. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1879 and 1883 and again from 1897 to 1901 he was mayor of the city of Cairo. In 1901 he became regional director of the Grand Army of the Republic veterans organization for Illinois.

After the death of Congressman George Washington Smith , Thistlewood was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election due for the 25th seat of Illinois , where he took up his new mandate on February 15, 1908. After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1913 . In 1912 he was not re-elected. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Napoleon Thistlewood retired. He died in Cairo on September 15, 1915.
