George E. White (1896)

George Elon White (born March 7, 1848 in Millbury , Worcester County , Massachusetts , †  May 17, 1935 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1899 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George White attended public schools in his home country. During the Civil War , he was a soldier in a Massachusetts volunteer unit that was part of the Union Army . After the war he graduated from business school in Worcester . In 1867 he moved to Chicago where he worked in the wood industry. He also got into the banking industry. Politically, White became a member of the Republican Party . He became a member of the Chicago City Council and served in the Illinois Senate from 1878 to 1886 .

In the 1894 congressional election , White was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Albert J. Hopkins on March 4, 1895 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1899 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . In 1898 he was not re-elected.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, George White resumed his previous activities in Chicago. He also became president of White Lumber Co. He died on May 17, 1935 in Chicago, where he was buried.
