Walter C. Newberry

Walter Cass Newberry (born December 23, 1835 in Sangerfield , Oneida County , New York , †  July 20, 1912 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After a successful school education, Walter Newberry worked in retail in Chicago and Detroit . During the civil war he served in the Union Army , where he rose to Brevet Brigadier General. After the war he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1865 he moved to Petersburg , Virginia . Between 1869 and 1870 he was mayor there. In 1870 he moved to Richmond , the state capital of Virginia, where he served as a school councilor overseeing public schools for four years. From 1876 he lived in Chicago, where he was post office owner in 1888 and 1889.

In the congressional elections of 1890 Newberry was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded George E. Adams on March 4, 1891 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1892, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1893 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Walter Newberry retired. He died in Chicago on July 20, 1912.
