As Medieval Welsh Literature [ 'kanveirð' ] ( Welsh "old / early poet"), the earliest bards called in Wales that should have formed from the surviving originals of the 6th century and our own creations their works. Their successors are called "younger bards" or "court poets" ( gogynfeirdd ).

The Cynfeirdd

The five poets Taliesin , Aneirin , Talhaearn, Blwchfardd and Cian (not to be confused with the hero Cian of Irish mythology ) are known by name, Llywarch Hen is also sometimes assigned to them. They all lived in northern England and southern Scotland in the second half of the 6th century and wrote in the only fragmentary Kumbrian language . Only the names of Talhaearn, Blwchfardd and Cian are known; their works are considered lost.

Taliesin and Aneirin were famous as poets as early as the Middle Ages , whose works were handed down in the Middle Cymrian language. Modern research has shown that some of these poems date from later eras and were only ascribed to the two after their deaths. Since there are hardly any written sources from this time, all assignments must be checked using criteria such as style, language and metrics , which is why there are some diverging technical opinions. The works are first handed down in manuscripts from the 13th century and thereafter, which makes these classifications even more difficult, as the originals are sometimes difficult to recognize behind the rework.
