Cian seduces Ethniu

Cian [ ciːən ] ( Eng . "Long, lasting") with the nickname Mac Cainte is a figure from the Celtic mythology of Ireland . In Lebor Gabala Eirenn he is considered the son of Dian Cecht and brother Miachs and Goibnius . Through Ethniu , the daughter of Balor , he is the father of the divine hero Lugh .

Cian owned a magical cow, which was stolen from Balor. Disguised as a woman, he entered Balor's fortress on Tory Island and seduced Balor's daughter Ethniu, who was prophesied that she would become the mother of the one who was destined to kill Balor. When Balor wants to give the child to the sea, Cian saves his son with the help of the druid Birog and hands him over to Manannan , the son of Lir, and Tailtiu , the queen of the Firbolgs, for care . Later, when Cian was carrying out a messenger assignment for Lugh, who is now king of the Tuatha de Danaan , Brian , Iuchar and Iucharba of the warring family of the Tuirenn killed him (see Aided Chlainne Tuirenn , "The Death of the Tuirenn Children"). However, the earth refuses three times to receive his body and later gives his son Lugh the names of his killers. This then avenges his father.

Cian may be equated with the Welsh hero Gwydyon .
