John C. Bagby

John Courts Bagby (born January 24, 1819 in Glasgow , Barren County , Kentucky , †  April 4, 1896 in Rushville , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Bagby attended public schools in his home country. He then studied until 1840 at Bacon College in Harrodsburg , where he was trained as a civil engineer. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1845, he began to work in this profession from 1846 in Rushville. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1874 , Bagby was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Republican William H. Ray on March 4, 1875 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1876, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1877 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Bagby practiced again as a lawyer in Rushville. Between 1882 and 1891 he worked as a judge at various courts. Then he worked again as a lawyer. He died on April 4, 1896 in Rushville, where he was also buried.
