Hugh Reid Belknap (born September 1, 1860 in Keokuk , Iowa , †  November 12, 1901 in Calamba , Philippines ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1899 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hugh Belknap was the son of William W. Belknap (1829-1890), who was US Secretary of War between 1869 and 1876 . He attended the common schools, the Adams Academy in Quincy ( Massachusetts ) and the Phillips Academy in Andover . From 1858 to 1892 he worked in various positions for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad . He then was head of the South Side Rapid Transit Railroad of Chicago , a streetcar company in Chicago .

Politically, Belknap was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1894 he was defeated by the Democrat Lawrence E. McGann . But Belknap appealed against the election result. When this was granted, he was able to take up his seat in Congress on December 27, 1895 . After being re-elected, he held it until March 3, 1899. During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . In 1898 he was not re-elected.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives was over, Hugh Belknap became a major paymaster in the US Army . From February 2, 1901 until his death on November 12 of the same year, he served in that capacity in Calamba, Philippines. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
