Life
Sathe began his career as a professional musician in his hometown in 1951, initially accompanying local musicians. In 1956 he moved to Great Britain, where he first worked for the Indian High Commission before joining the Asian Music Circle group led by Ayana Deva Angadi . Then he accompanied the sitar player Bhaskar Chandavarkar, with whom he performed with Larry Adler in 1961 . Then he played with the singer Surya Kumari. In 1965 he began working with John Mayer and Joe Harriott in the double quintet Indo Jazz Fusion , which lasted until 1970 (most recently without Harriott). This was how Joachim Ernst Berendt became aware of him, who invited him to the Donaueschinger Musiktage in 1967 , where he and his trio (with Diwan Motihar on the sitar and Kasan Thakur on the tanpura ) listened to Irène Schweizer's trio under the motto Jazz Meets India ( with Mani Neumeier and Uli Trepte ) and the two wind players Barney Wilen and Manfred Schoof .
Sathe continued to lead his trio through the 1970s and 1980s. He also accompanied Alla Rakha and Ravi Shankar as a tanpura player and was part of Amancio D'Silva's band projects . From 1970 to 1973 he also performed with Julie Felix and Danny Thompson , and then toured internationally with John Renbourn's band (with Jacqui McShee and Tony Roberts ) in 1979 and 1981 and recorded the albums Maid in Bedlam , Enchanted Garden and Live record in America . He then founded a group with Tony Roberts and the singer Shobhana Jeyasingh. He also played with Harry South , Michael Garrick , Tubby Hayes and Acker Bilk .
Since the mid-1990s, he was no longer able to work because of arthritis . He died of complications from a brain tumor .
