Amancio D'Silva

Amancio D'Silva (born March 19, 1936 in Mumbai , India , † July 17, 1996 ) was an Indian jazz guitarist and composer living in England .

Live and act

D'Silva, whose family was from Goa , began playing guitar as a teenager, influenced by the music of American jazz guitarists like Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery , which he heard on programs on Voice of America , and performing with local jazz groups. In his early twenties he founded his own band, in which the saxophonist Braz Gonzalvez and the pianist Anacleto Naronha played, and with which he performed all over India. In Shimla he met his future wife Joyce, a teacher from Ireland. With the support of the Maharani of Jaipur , a passionate jazz fan, he acquired his first high-quality guitar, a Gibson.

In 1967 D'Silva traveled to London with his family, initially to provide medical care to his son Stephano. He worked as a cleaner, alongside as a musician in the pub Prospect of Whitby and in the Spanish Garden Club in the West End ; the family lived in the Ealing district. Through Jonathan Miller , he met music producer Denis Preston , which led to D'Silva collaborating with British musicians such as Don Rendell and Ian Carr . The result for EMI was the album Integration: Introducing Amancio D'Silva , which was hailed by critics as a successful fusion of jazz and Indian music. In 1969 the album Hum Dono was created with the Jamaican saxophonist Joe Harriott , for which D'Silva wrote most of the compositions. This was followed by Reflections: The Romantic Guitar of Amancio D'Silva (1971), with orchestral arrangements by a. a. Stan Tracey of his own songs, but also those from the standard repertoire. In 1972 he recorded the album Dream Sequence with his ethno-jazz band Cosmic Eye , which included Alan Branscombe , Keshav Sathe and John Mayer . During this phase he also worked with Ghanaian percussionist Guy Warren .

In the following years D'Silva u. a. with other EMI productions, such as Clem Alford and Lynn Dobson. In the 1980s he lived in Essex , where he appeared in jazz clubs in Ipswich , and around 1985 in a series of concerts at St. Mary's Arts Center in Colchester , in which Marcio Mattos also took part, and at concerts at the Norwich Arts Center . In addition to his work as a musician, he made guitar pick-ups for various rock musicians, until his health deteriorated so much in the mid-1990s that he had to give up his music career. From the mid-1980s he taught at Jenako Art in London and at Krishnamurti International School in Hampshire. In 1992 he was partially paralyzed by a stroke; he died of further attacks in 1996 and was buried near Brighton.
