Henry Pelham Holmes Bromwell (born August 26, 1823 in Baltimore , Maryland , †  January 7, 1903 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1869 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Life

In 1824 Henry Browmwell moved with his parents to Cincinnati , Ohio, and in 1836 to Cumberland County , Illinois. He attended private schools in his respective homeland as well as the Marshall Academy in Illinois. In 1844 he became a teacher at this school. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1853, he began to work in this profession in Vandalia . He also edited his father's newspaper for a few years. Between 1853 and 1857 he was a judge in Fayette County . Politically, Bromwell was instrumental in founding and building the Republican Party in Illinois. Since 1857 he lived in Charleston .

In the congressional election of 1864 , Bromwell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the Seventh Constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Democrat John R. Eden on March 4, 1865 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1869 . During this time the civil war ended . Since 1865, the work of Congress has been overshadowed by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial. In 1868, Bromwell was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

Henry Bromwell was a delegate to a meeting in 1870 to revise the constitution of his state. He then moved to Denver, Colorado , where he practiced as a lawyer. Between 1871 and 1874 he headed the Denver City School Board. In 1874 he was a member of the Territorial Government Council; In 1875 he was a delegate to the constituent assembly of the future state of Colorado. In the following years he turned down some judges he had been offered. In 1879 he was entrusted with the summary of the general laws of the state of Colorado. In the 1880s he switched to the Democratic Party. He died on January 7, 1903 in Denver after a long illness.
