Thomas F. Tipton

Thomas Foster Tipton (born August 29, 1833 in Harrisburg , Franklin County , Ohio , †  February 7, 1904 in Bloomington , Illinois ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Tipton attended public schools in his home country. In 1843 he moved with his parents to McLean County , Illinois. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1854, he began to work in this profession. In 1867 and 1868 he was a district attorney in the eighth judicial district of Illinois. In 1870 he was elected district judge there. After a restructuring of the judicial districts in Illinois, he exercised his judge's office in the 14th district. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1876 Tipton was elected in the 13th  constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded the future Vice President Adlai Ewing Stevenson on March 4, 1877 . Since he lost to Stevenson in 1878, he could only hold one term in Congress until March 3, 1879 .

Thomas Tipton served again as district judge between 1891 and 1897. After that he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on February 7, 1904 in Bloomington, where he was also buried.
