Bernard G. Caulfield

Bernard Gregory Caulfield (born October 18, 1828 in Alexandria , Virginia , †  December 19, 1887 in Deadwood , Dakota Territory ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bernard Caulfield received a good education. He studied until 1848 at Georgetown College in Washington, DC After a subsequent law degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his admission to the bar in 1850, he began to work in Lexington ( Kentucky ) in this profession. In 1853 he moved his residence and law firm to Chicago . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

After the death of MP John Blake Rice , Caulfield was elected by-election for the first seat of Illinois as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he took up his new mandate on February 1, 1875. Since he was also elected for the following legislative period in 1874, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1877 . From March 4, 1875, he was chairman of the Justice Department's Expenditure Control Committee . In 1876 he renounced another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Caulfield practiced again as a lawyer. In 1878 he moved to Deadwood in what is now South Dakota . He also worked as a lawyer in his new home. He also bought larger lands. He died in Deadwood on December 19, 1887 and was buried in St. Louis .
