Philip Sidney Post (born March 19, 1833 in Florida , Orange County , New York , † January 6, 1895 in Galesburg , Illinois ) was an American general, diplomat and politician .

Life

After graduating from Union College in Schenectady and Poughkeepsie Law School , Philip S. Post worked as a lawyer and newspaper editor in Kansas . At the beginning of the civil war , he joined the US Army (Union Army) , served mainly at the front until the end of the war and rose to become general . He received the Medal of Honor for his service at the Battle of Nashville .

Post, a member of the Republican Party , was consul in Vienna from 1866 and consul general responsible for Austria-Hungary from 1874 to 1879 . From 1887 to 1895 he was a member of the United States House of Representatives as a representative of the State of Illinois.
