Cardiss Collins
Cardiss Collins (born September 24, 1931 in St. Louis , Missouri , † February 3, 2013 in Alexandria , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1973 and 1997 she represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Cardiss Hortense Robertson, her maiden name, attended Detroit High School of Commerce and then studied at Northwestern University . In the years that followed, she worked as a secretary, accountant, and auditor at the Illinois State Treasury. She married Congressman George W. Collins .
After the death of her husband, who was killed in a plane crash, Cardiss Collins was elected as the Democratic Party candidate to succeed him in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she took up her new mandate on June 5, 1973. Her constituency had been renumbered from sixth to seventh. After eleven re-elections, she could remain in Congress until January 3, 1997 . During this time the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate Affair fell . From 1979 to 1981 she was the successor to Parren Mitchell chair of the Congressional Black Caucus .
In 1996 Cardiss Collins declined to run again. She then lived in Alexandria, where she died on February 3, 2013.
