Jasper D. Ward

Jasper Delos Ward (born February 1, 1829 in Java , Wyoming County , New York , †  August 6, 1902 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jasper Ward attended Allegheny College in Meadville ( Pennsylvania ). After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1852, he began to work in this profession in Chicago . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1855 and 1860, with the exception of 1857, he was a member of the Chicago City Council. He took eight months as a soldier in the army of the Union in the Civil War part. Between 1862 and 1870 he was a member of the Illinois Senate .

In the congressional elections of 1872 Ward was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded John F. Farnsworth on March 4, 1873 . Since he was not confirmed in 1874, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1875 .

Between 1875 and 1877, Jasper Ward was a federal attorney for the northern part of the state of Illinois. In 1877 he moved to Leadville, Colorado. From 1881 to 1882 he served as a judge in the fifth judicial district of that state. He later settled in Denver, where he practiced as a lawyer again. He died there on August 6, 1902.
