Green Berry Room

Green Berry Raum (born December 3, 1829 in Golconda , Pope County , Illinois , †  December 18, 1909 in Chicago , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1867 and 1869 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives . He had previously served as an officer in the Union Army in the civil war.

Career

Green Berry Raum attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1853, he began to work in this profession in Golconda. From 1856 to 1858 he lived in Kansas , where he also practiced as a lawyer. He then moved to Harrisburg , Illinois. During the civil war he was a member of the Union Army, in which he rose from major to brigadier general . He took part in the first battle for Corinth , the second Vicksburg campaign , the battle of Chattanooga and the Atlanta campaign . In the meantime he was also wounded. After the war he got into the railroad business and became president of the Cairo and Vincennes Railroad .

Politically, space joined the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1866 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Andrew J. Kuykendall on March 4, 1867 . Since he was not confirmed in 1868, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1869 . Since 1865, the work of Parliament has been overshadowed by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , culminating in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial. In 1868 the 14th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Green Raum worked as a lawyer again. From 1876 to 1883 he was Commissioner of Internal Revenue for the tax authorities and from 1889 to 1893 for the pension authority. He died on December 18, 1909 in Chicago and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
