Harrisburg is a city and county seat of Saline County in southern US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000 Harrisburg had 9,860 residents.

Harrisburg is 176 km southeast of the city of St. Louis , 35 km west of the city of Marion , 72 km southeast of the city of Mt. Vernon and 91 km southwest of Evansville in the metropolitan area and is the county seat of Saline County.
South of the city is the Shawnee National Forest, administered from Harrisburg .
history
The city emerged as a village in 1853 and became the county seat in 1859; Harrisburg was promoted to town in 1889. From the beginning, coal was mined and processed here, but it was not until after the American Civil War that it became an important industry for the entire county and industrial coal mining increasingly attracted workers to Harrisburg. To this day, the coal industry is one of the city's largest employers.
A tornado devastated large parts of the city on February 29, 2012.
