George E. Sangmeister

George Edward Sangmeister (born February 16, 1931 in Frankfort , Will County , Illinois , †  October 7, 2007 in Joliet , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1989 and 1995 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Sangmeister attended public schools in Joliet Township and then Joliet Junior College between 1949 and 1951 . During the Korean War , he served in the US Army from 1951 to 1953 . He then continued his education at Elmhurst College until 1957 . After a subsequent law degree at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago and his admission to the bar in 1960, he began to work in this profession. From 1961 to 1963 he was a Justice of the Peace in Will County. From 1961 to 1964 he also worked there as a district judge. He then became a prosecutor in the same district. He held this post between 1964 and 1968. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1972 to 1976 Sangmeister was an MP in the Illinois House of Representatives ; from 1976 to 1987 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1986 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the office of Lieutenant Governor of Illinois.

In the 1988 congressional elections , Sangmeister was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Republican Jack Davis on January 3, 1989 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1995 . Since 1993 he has represented the eleventh district of his state there as the successor to Frank Annunzio . In 1994 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, George Sangmeister practiced as a lawyer again. He died of leukemia on October 7, 2007 in Joliet .
