J. Frank Aldrich (1896)

James Franklin "Frank" Aldrich (born April 6, 1853 in Two Rivers , Manitowoc County , Wisconsin , †  March 8, 1933 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1897 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Frank Aldrich was the son of Congressman William Aldrich (1820-1885). In 1861 he came to Chicago with his parents, where he attended public schools and later Chicago University . He then studied at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy ( New York ) until 1877 . He later made linseed oil. He also got into the gas business. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1886 and 1888 he was a member of the Cook County County Council, of which he was President in 1887. That year he was also a member of the district's education committee. From 1891 to 1893 Aldrich was the City of Chicago Commissioner for Public Works.

In the congressional election of 1892 , Aldrich was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Abner Taylor on March 4, 1893 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1897 . From 1895 he was chairman of the Committee on Accounts .

In 1896, Aldrich renounced another congressional candidacy. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he was appointed consul in Cuba . At that time this island was still part of Spain . However, he was unable to take up this post because of the Spanish-American War that had broken out in the meantime . Between 1898 and 1923 he was a railroad appraiser . He died in Chicago on March 8, 1933.
