William L. Springer (1971)

William Lee Springer (born April 12, 1909 in Sullivan , Sullivan County , Indiana , †  September 20, 1992 in Champaign , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1951 and 1973 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Springer attended the public schools of his home country and then the Culver Military Academy . He then studied until 1931 at DePauw University in Greencastle . After studying law at the University of Illinois and being admitted to the bar in 1935, he began working in this profession in Champaign. Between 1940 and 1942 he was a prosecutor in Champaign County . During the Second World War , Springer served as an officer in the US Navy from 1942 to 1945 . From 1946 to 1950 he served as a district judge in Champaign County.

Politically, Springer joined the Republican Party . In the 1950 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Rolla C. McMillen on January 3, 1951 . After ten re-elections, he was able to complete eleven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1973 . During this time, the Cold War , the Korean War , the Vietnam War and, domestically, the civil rights movement fell .

In 1972, William Springer decided not to run again. From 1973 to 1975 he was a member of the Federal Power Commission ; from 1976 to 1979 he was a member of the Federal Election Commission . He died on September 20, 1992 in Champaign.
