Anton Joseph Johnson

Anton Joseph Johnson (born October 20, 1878 in Peoria , Illinois , †  April 16, 1958 in Macomb , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1949 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Anton Johnson attended the public schools in his home country and the School of Agriculture at the University of Missouri at Columbia . Between 1898 and 1901 he was a sergeant in an infantry unit in the US Army . After that he was a postman in Peoria until 1913. He then worked in agriculture; he specialized in the processing of milk and milk products. Between 1931 and 1936 he was President of the Illinois Milk Traders Association. In 1937 he became president of the Illinois Dairy Products Association . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the 1938 congressional elections , Johnson was elected to the 14th  constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat Chester C. Thompson on January 3, 1939 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1949 . By 1941, the last of the Federal Government's New Deal laws were passed there under President Franklin D. Roosevelt , which Johnson's party was rather opposed to. Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences. Johnson also saw the start of the Cold War as a Congressman.

In 1948 he renounced another candidacy. Anton Johnson was Mayor of Macomb between 1949 and 1951. He died there on April 16, 1958.
