Lawrence Edward McGann (born February 2, 1852 in Galway , Ireland , †  July 22, 1928 in Oak Park , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1895 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1855, Lawrence McGann came from his Irish homeland with his mother to Milford , Massachusetts , where he attended public schools. In 1865 the family moved to Chicago . McGann worked in the shoe trade until 1879. After that he was employed by the city administration until 1885. Between 1885 and 1891 he was his hometown commissioner for the road system. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1890 McGann was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Frank Lawler on March 4, 1891 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1895 . From 1893 he was chairman of the working committee. In the 1894 election , McGann was re-elected to the third district. Accordingly, on March 4, 1895, he entered another legislative period in the House of Representatives. His opponent, Hugh R. Belknap , protested the outcome of the election. When this was granted, McGann had to cede his mandate to Belknap on December 27, 1895.

In 1896 and 1897 he was president of the Chicago Municipal Railroad. From 1898 to 1901 he acted in this city as a commissioner for public works. He held this office again between 1911 and 1915. From 1901 to 1907 he was the city auditor ( controller ). Lawrence McGann died in Oak Park on July 22, 1928 and was buried in Chicago.
