George E. Adams

George Everett Adams (born June 18, 1840 in Keene , New Hampshire , †  October 5, 1917 in Peterborough , New Hampshire) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1891 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1853, George Adams came to Chicago , Illinois with his parents . He later attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. This was followed by studies at Harvard University until 1860 . During the Civil War , he served in an Illinois artillery unit that was part of the Union Army . After studying law at Harvard and being admitted to the bar in 1865, he began working in this profession in Chicago. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1880 and 1883 he was a member of the Illinois Senate .

In the congressional election of 1882 , Adams was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded John C. Sherwin on March 4, 1883 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1891 . In 1890 he was not re-elected. After his time in the US House of Representatives, George Adams practiced as a lawyer in Chicago again. He died in Peterborough on October 5, 1917.
