Bennett McVey Stewart (born August 6, 1912 in Huntsville , Alabama , † April 26, 1988 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American Democratic Party politician who was a representative of Illinois in the US House of Representatives for one term .

Life

After attending public schools in Huntsville and Birmingham , Stewart studied at the local Miles College , graduated in 1936 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and was then vice-principal of Irondale High School . After he was associate professor ( associate professor ) for sociology at Miles College between 1938 and 1940 , he became a manager at an insurer and rose to the position of director of the company in Illinois in 1950. In 1968 he switched to the civil service and was an inspector at the Chicago Building Department and shortly thereafter a specialist in rehabilitation measures at the Chicago Department for Urban Development.

His political career began Stewart in local politics when he in 1971 in the 21st  Ward as a member of the City Council was chosen by Chicago and confirmed the 1975th In addition, he was between 1971 and 1978 delegate of the Democratic Conventions of Illinois and 1972 and 1976 member of the Committee of the Democratic Party for the 21st Ward of Chicago. He was also a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1972 and 1976 .

In the US congressional elections in 1978 Stewart was elected as a candidate of the Democratic Party to the US House of Representatives and represented there from January 3, 1979 to January 3, 1981 for a legislative period the first congressional electoral district of Illinois as the successor to Ralph Metcalfe . After failing in his re-nomination efforts in 1980, he was administrative assistant to Jane Byrne from 1981 to 1983 , who became the first woman mayor of Chicago in 1979 .
