Career

Leslie Arends attended schools in his home country and then Oberlin College in Ohio . During the final stages of World War I , he served in the US Navy in 1918 and 1919 . He then worked in agriculture and banking. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In the 1934 congressional elections , Arends was elected to the 17th  constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Frank Gillespie on January 3, 1935started. After 19 re-elections, he was able to complete almost 20 legislative terms in Congress until his resignation on December 31, 1974 . From 1943 he held the position of Whip in the Republican faction as the successor to Harry Lane Englebright . Since 1973 he represented the 15th district of his home state there.

In the 1930s, Arends was an isolationist and thus an opponent of American intervention in foreign territories. During his time in Congress, further New Deal laws were passed there until 1941 , most of which he rejected. Since 1941 the work of the Congress was overshadowed by the events of the Second World War and its consequences. His time in Congress also saw the start of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War . Arends was considered a conservative MP. During the Watergate Affair in 1974, he stood by President Richard Nixon at all stages . Arends was also personally friends with Nixon's successor Gerald Ford .

In 1974 Leslie Arends renounced another candidacy. He resigned from his mandate on December 31 of this year, four days before the official end of the legislative period. After that, he no longer appeared politically. He died on July 17, 1985 in Naples and was buried in his birthplace, Melvin.
