Thomas Jefferson Henderson (born November 29, 1824 in Brownsville , Tennessee , †  February 6, 1911 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1895 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

At the age of eleven, Thomas Henderson came to Illinois with his parents, where he attended public schools. Between 1847 and 1849 he was an administrator on the Stark County County Council ; from 1849 to 1853 he was employed by the local district court. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1852, he began to work in this profession in Toulon . Politically, Henderson joined the Republican Party founded in 1854 . He was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives in 1855 and 1856 . From 1857 to 1860 he was a member of the State Senate . During the civil war he served as an officer in the Union Army , in which he rose to Brevet Brigadier General. After the war he practiced as a lawyer again. From 1867 he lived in Princeton . In 1871 he headed the fifth financial district of his state.

In the congressional election of 1874 , Henderson was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded John B. Hawley on March 4, 1875 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 . Since 1883 he represented the seventh district of his state. From 1881 to 1883 he headed the military committee. From 1889 to 1891 he was chairman of the Committee on Rivers and Ports. In 1894 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

In 1896, Thomas Henderson became a board member of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers . In 1900 he became a civil member of the Board of Ordnance and Fortifications , which dealt with military fortifications. He held this office until his death on February 6, 1911 in Washington.
