Dan Lipinski

Daniel William "Dan" Lipinski (born July 15, 1966 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives since 2005 . There he followed his father Bill Lipinski .

Dan Lipinski graduated from Northwestern University in 1988 with a bachelor's degree ; the following year he earned a masters degree from Stanford University . After an internship at the US Department of Labor , he worked between 1993 and 1996 on the staff of Congressmen George E. Sangmeister and Jerry Costello ; he then worked on the campaign team of Richard A. Devine, who successfully applied for the post of prosecutor in Cook County .

In 1998 Lipinski completed his training when he obtained a Ph.D. of political science at Duke University doctorate. From January to August 1999 he was on the communications staff of Dick Gephardt , chairman of the Democratic minority group in the House of Representatives. Finally, he was a faculty member at the University of Notre Dame from 2000 to 2001 ; then he moved to the University of Tennessee , where he stayed until 2004.

That year, Bill Lipinski, who has been in Congress since 1983, first ran for re-election and easily won his party's primary . Immediately afterwards, he announced his resignation and convinced the Democratic leadership of Illinois to put his son on the ballot in his place. This aroused opposition in parts of the party, because Dan Lipinski became a candidate for Democratic Congress without going through the primary. He ran in the third electoral district, which is considered to be comparatively conservative, and which includes southwest Chicago and some suburbs, and, representing similar moderate political principles as his father, prevailed against the Republican Ryan Chlada. As a result, he has been re-elected six times so far, most recently in 2016. In the internal party primary election in March 2018 for the main election in November 2018 , Lipinski faced stiff competition from within the party. As one of the last pro-life democrats in the House of Representatives, initiatives such as Planned Parenthood and EMILY's List invested large sums of money and the use of volunteers in his opponent against him, but he prevailed with 2,000 votes, supported by Susan B. Anthony List , who campaigns against abortion. His current mandate runs until January 3, 2019.
