Cheryl L. "Cheri" Callahan-Bustos (born October 17, 1961 in Springfield , Illinois ) is an American politician . She has represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives since 2013 .

Career

Cheryl Callahan, her maiden name, attended the public schools in her home country. In 1979 she graduated from Springfield High School ; She studied at Illinois College in 1981 before enrolling at the University of Maryland in 1983 . She finished her studies in 1985 at the University of Illinois at Springfield, where she studied journalism. For 17 years she worked as a reporter and publisher for the Quad-City Times . In this newspaper she reported on local events, including corruption in regional administrations. She later worked for the Trinity Regional Health System for six years . Since 2008, she has been the vice president of public relations for the Iowa Health System . At the same time she embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 2007 to 2011 she served on the East Moline ward council .

In the 2012 congressional election , Cheri Bustos was elected to the 17th  constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she succeeded Republican Bobby Schilling on January 3, 2013 , whom she defeated in the election. After three re-elections so far in 2014, 2016 and 2018, she can continue to hold office today. Her new legislative period runs until January 3, 2021. She is a member of the cross-party No Labels group . She wants to apply for a leadership role in the Democratic Party for the upcoming legislature.

Cheri Bustos is married to a police officer and has three grown sons.
