Stephen A. Hoxworth

Stephen Arnold Hoxworth (born May 1, 1860 in Maquon , Knox County , Illinois , †  January 25, 1930 in Rapatee , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1915 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Stephen Hoxworth attended public schools in his home country. In 1880 he moved to Blue Springs , Nebraska , where he worked in banking and the grain business. He also became a member of the local state militia. In 1885 he returned to Illinois, where he worked in agriculture near Rapatee. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1907 and 1912 he was Mayor of Maquon Township .

In the 1912 congressional election , Hoxworth was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 15th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded George W. Prince on March 4, 1913 . Since he refused to run again in 1914, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1915 . While in Congress, the 16th and 17th amendments were ratified. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Stephen Hoxworth returned to farming. He died on January 25, 1930 in Rapatee.
