Ramón de la Fuente Leal (born December 31, 1907 in Bilbao , † September 15, 1973 in Madrid ), better known as Lafuente , was a Spanish football player and coach .

Career as a football player

society

Lafuente played for FC Barakaldo at the age of 16 . In 1926 he moved to Athletic Bilbao, where he soon formed a legendary series of attacks together with Guillermo Gorostiza , Bata , José Iraragorri and Chirri II . He won the double with Bilbao in the 1929/30 and 1930/31 seasons , the Spanish Cup in 1932 and 1933 , the championship again in the 1933/34 season and the Basque Country regional championship seven times between 1927 and 1934 . In 1934, after eight years and 64 goals in 211 competitive games, Lafuente left the club and moved to the capital club and newly promoted Atlético Madrid . After the 1934/35 season he ended his career.

National team

Lafuente made his debut on April 17, 1927 in a friendly against Switzerland in the Spanish national team . By 1935 he played a total of eight international matches. He was also part of the Selección , which took part in the 1934 World Cup and played the last sixteen against Brazil (3: 1) and the first quarter-final against Italy (1: 1 a.d.). In the scandalous replay of the quarter-finals against the Italians, he was one of seven Spaniards who were replaced because of the rigors of the previous game.

Career as a football coach

In the 1940/41 season , Lafuente replaced the rehabilitating Ricardo Zamora as coach of Atlético Aviación on the first ten game days . His record showed five wins, four draws and one defeat. The club won the Spanish championship and the Copa Eva Duarte at the end of the season . For the 1943/44 season Lafuente was coach of Deportivo La Coruña . He rose with the Galicians in the 1944/45 season, however, from the Segunda División .
