José Iraragorri (born March 16, 1912 in Basauri , † April 27, 1983 ), also known by the nickname El Chato , was a Spanish football player in the position of a striker , who worked as a coach for a long time after his active career .

Life

player

The native Basque came to Athletic Bilbao in 1928 at the age of 16 and made the leap into the first team in the following season 1929/30 . He made his first division debut on January 5, 1930 in a game against Basque rivals Real Unión Irún , which was won 5-2.

In the same season, Iraragorri won the championship and the cup with Bilbao and was able to defend both titles in the following season 1930/31 . The Copa del Rey could also be won in the two following years 1932 and 1933 - and thus four times in a row. Two more championship titles were added in the seasons 1933/34 and 1935/36 .

The Spanish Civil War , which broke out in 1936, ended the first great epoch of Athlétic Bilbao and also the national team career of Iraragorri, who made seven international appearances between 1931 and 1936 and took part in the 1934 World Cup, where he beat Brazil in the round of 16 (3: 1) scored 1-0 with a penalty. Iraragorri also played in the quarter-finals against eventual world champions Italy and achieved a 1-1 with his team after extra time. Iraragorri was missing in the replay required at the time, in which the Italians were able to prevail 1-0.

Iraragorri joined the Basque national team , which took a trip to Mexico in 1937 and took part in the game operation of the Mexican league in the 1938/39 season under the name Euzkadi .

He then moved to Argentina, where he played for CA San Lorenzo de Almagro in the 1939/40 season. At the end of 1940 he came back to Mexico and joined the Mexico City- based Real Club España , with whom he won the Mexican championship twice (1942 and 1945), the cup competition once (1944) and the Supercup twice (1944 and 1945) .

In 1946 he returned to his homeland and played again briefly for Athletic Bilbao, in whose ranks he probably let his active career end in the 1946/47 season .

Trainer

In the following season 1947/48 he took over the coaching post at FC Barakaldo before he coached his former club Bilbao for three years between 1949 and 1952. According to the information from the Spanish-language Wikipedia (button on the left), he then also trained Real Valladolid , Celta Vigo , Hércules Alicante and SD Indautxu .
