Elliott W. Sproul

Elliott Wilford Sproul (born December 28, 1856 in Kings County , New Brunswick , Canada , †  June 22, 1935 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1921 and 1931 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elliott Sproul attended public schools in his Canadian homeland. In 1879 he came to Boston , Massachusetts, and then to Chicago in 1880, where he worked in the construction industry. In 1886 he was granted American citizenship. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1896 and 1899 he was a member of the Chicago City Council. In June 1920 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago, where Warren G. Harding was nominated as a presidential candidate. Between 1919 and 1921 he was a board member of the Chicago Public Library .

In the 1920 congressional election , Sproul was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded William W. Wilson on March 4, 1921 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1931 . In 1930 he was not re-elected. Elliott Sproul died on June 22, 1935 in Chicago, where he was also buried.
