Emmet Byrne
Emmet Francis Byrne (born December 6, 1896 in Chicago , Illinois , † September 25, 1974 in Evanston , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1957 and 1959 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Emmet Byrne attended the public schools in his home country and the St. Ignatius Academy . He then studied at Loyola University . Byrne also took part in the First World War. After studying law at DePaul University and being admitted to the bar in 1919, he began working in this profession in Chicago. From 1921 to 1923 he served on the city council as Assistant Corporation Counsel . Between 1923 and 1928 he was the assistant prosecutor in Cook County . In 1934 and 1936 he applied unsuccessfully for a judge's position at the Chicago City Court. Between 1947 and 1948, and again from 1955 to 1956, he served on the Hearing Committee of the Illinois Trade Commission.
Politically, Byrne was a member of the Republican Party . In the 1956 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded James C. Murray on January 3, 1957 . Since he was not confirmed in 1958, he could only hold one term in Congress until January 3, 1959 . This was shaped by the events of the Cold War and the civil rights movement .
After his time in the US House of Representatives, Emmet Byrne practiced as a lawyer again. In 1970 he became a member of the Chicago Regional Export Expansion Council . He died in Evanston on September 25, 1974.
