Lauren Ashley Underwood (born October 4, 1986 in Mayfield Heights , Ohio , United States ) is an American health care professional and politician . As a member of the Democratic Party , she has held the 14th seat of the State of Illinois in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . She was elected to this office in November 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019. She is the youngest black woman in the United States House of Representatives.

Life

Underwood was born on October 4, 1986 in Mayfield Heights , Ohio . At the age of three, she and her family moved to Naperville , Illinois . She attended Neuqua Valley High School and graduated in 2004. From 2003 to 2004 she worked for the City of Naperville on the Fair Housing Advisory Commission . In 2008 she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Michigan and completed a course on nursing policy . In her opinion, this course made her move into health policy . She joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (not to be confused with the National Panhellenic Conference ). In 2009 she received her Masters of Science in Nursing and Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University .

Political career

In 2014, Underwood became a consultant at the United States Department of Health and Human Services , where she worked on the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act . In August 2017, Underwood announced her candidacy for the United States House of Representatives elections . She won the primary with 57 percent against six opposing candidates. In the 2018 election, she defeated Randy Hultgren with 52.5 percent of the vote. Since January 3, 2019, she has held the 14th seat of the State of Illinois in the United States House of Representatives.
