WFMT ( Chicago's Fine Arts Station ) is a US radio station based in Chicago , Illinois . It broadcasts a classical and art program with an emphasis on folk and jazz .

The station is managed by Window To The World Communications, Inc. (WTTW). WTTW is the operator of one of the two Chicago public TV stations of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). The station is the flagship of the WFMT Radio Network as well as the Beethoven and Jazz Network. A number of productions are fed into the Public Radio Exchange (PRX).

WFMT broadcasts on UKW 98.7 M Hz with 6k W also on HD radio .

history

The station went on the air on December 13, 1951 under the callsign WOAK .

A number of famous cultural workers have worked for the station throughout its history. The writer, theater and film director Mike Nichols came to the station as a student at the University of Chicago in 1952. Nichols started the folk program The Midnight Special in 1953. The show has aired weekly on WFMT since then. It is still moderated by Rich Warren.

Unusually, WFMT has been a guest member of the European Broadcasting Union since 1980 .

The station was awarded the Peabody Award in 1984. The station won the award in the “Institutional Award” category for its art program hosted by Raymond Nordstrand.
