Peter James Roskam (* 13. September 1961 in Hinsdale , DuPage County , Illinois ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2019 .

biography

After graduating from Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn in 1979, he studied first at the Catholic University of America and then at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , which he completed in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He served on the staff of Congressmen Tom DeLay from Texas (1985/86) and Henry Hyde from Illinois (1986/87) as well as a teacher and entrepreneur. He then completed postgraduate studies in law at the Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1989 with a Juris Doctor (JD). After his admission to the bar in Illinois, he became a partner in the law firm Salvi, Roskam & Maher .

Roskam began his political career when he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1993 , to which he served as a Republican for three terms until 1999. In 1998 he ran for the first time against Judy Biggert for the nomination to the US House of Representatives in the 13th congressional electoral district of Illinois. He then became a member of the Illinois Senate and was a member from 2000 to 2007.

In the 2006 election to the US House of Representatives , he was elected to succeed Henry Hyde, who had been in office since 1974 and was not re-running, as a member of the 6th congressional constituency of Illinois. He was able to prevail with 51.4 percent against his Democratic opponent Tammy Duckworth , who received 48.6% of the vote. Roskam took up his seat in the US House of Representatives on January 3, 2007. In the 2008 election he was confirmed with 59 percent of the vote and re-elected in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016. In the election in 2018 he was defeated in the first half of Donald Trumps Presidential Democrat Sean Casten . Roskam resigned from Congress on January 3, 2019.
