history

Badminton, known as shuttlecock in the GDR, was played in the GDR since 1955. During the 1956 Summer Olympics, the Tractor Doberlug-Kirchhain Association , headed by master watchmaker Herbert Tzschirich, advertised in German Sportecho that an opponent was being sought for a badminton competition. At the first attempt, no opponents answered, at the second two for an appointment. The Doberlug-Kirchhainers played against Berlin and HSG DHfK Leipzig in one day . In the period that followed, badminton sections shot up like mushrooms in the GDR, including the section in the BSG activist Tröbitz not far from Doberlug-Kirchhain, which became a pioneer in this sport in eastern Germany. The East German Association itself was founded in 1958 and in the same year also became a member of the Badminton World Federation , then still known as the International Badminton Federation . The first team championship was held in 1960, and the first individual championships in 1961. carried out. In the 1961/1962 season the international badminton tournament premiered in Tröbitz, and in 1973/1974 the international Werner Seelenbinder memorial tournament. In 1971 the DFV also became a member of the continental umbrella organization Badminton Europe , then still operating under the European Badminton Union . With the end of the GDR in 1990, the end of the association was sealed and the DFV was affiliated to the German Badminton Association on January 1, 1991 .
