International badminton tournament in Tröbitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Badminton Tournament in Tröbitz was the first attempt of the Badminton Association of East Germany , international badminton to establish championships in the GDR after the model of Western tournaments. It started as a New Year's tournament in 1962, but was postponed to the Easter weekend after three events. The first edition of the tournament with the participation of the reigning unofficial world champion Erland Kops was partly recorded by GDR television. The finals were relocated from the Glückauf sports hall to the nearby cultural center for reasons of audience capacity.

The previous version started as a national tournament as early as 1960. In 1961 the tournament was supposed to take place as an all-German tournament, but the FRG athletes did not receive a start permit from their association.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, BV Tröbitz initiated the international Tröbitz junior tournament, which took place for the 19th time in 2017.
