Ferry Sonneville
Ferdinand Alexander "Ferry" Sonneville (born January 3, 1931 in Jakarta , † November 20, 2003 ibid) was an Indonesian badminton player and official.
Career
Ferry Sonneville was one of the world's best players in badminton for a decade from the mid-1950s. In 1955 he won his first international title at the Malaysian Open , followed by victories at the Dutch Open , German Open and French Open . At the All England 1959 he was defeated in the final by his compatriot Tan Joe Hok. Three years later he won bronze at the Asian Games . After successes in Canada and the USA in 1962, he also made guest appearances behind the iron curtain in the GDR at the international badminton tournament in Tröbitz in 1963. Another attempt at the All-England title ended in the final again in the same year.
After the end of his sporting career, he occupied numerous functions. Among other things, he was President of the FIABCI (1995–1996), President of the International Badminton Federation (1971–1974) and Chairman of the Advisory Council of International Executive Corps for Indonesia (1981–1997). He has received several awards for his services, including the Satya Lencana Kebudayaan (1961), the Tanda Jasa Bintang RI Kelas II (1964) and the FIABCI Medal of Honor (Melbourne, 1988).
