CiviCRM is free software available in several languages for non-profit organizations , associations, foundations, etc. CRM stands either for customer relationship management originating from the profit-oriented economy or for constituent relationship management , whereby constituent denotes the Profit organizations typical contact groups like donors, volunteers, newsletter subscribers etc. are meant.

history

The development of CiviCRM started in autumn 2004, in March 2005 the first release as version 1.0 took place. CiviCRM version 5.15.0 is now available. The software is supported by an international community, with a core developer team of ten people currently responsible for the development process.

On April 14, 2010, the Free Software Foundation officially recommended CiviCRM as a contact management system for non-profit organizations and at the same time announced that they would use the software themselves in the future. The organization had previously classified the development of such a system as a high priority project , one of the projects and plans in the area of free software, the further development of which is particularly supported by the Free Software Foundation. In her appeal she was looking for free software for donation management and communication with members and donors - mainly for her own use, but also in view of a need from other non-profit organizations.

In January 2011, the Internet platform SourceForge , which specializes in free software, presented CiviCRM as project of the month.

Features of the software

The general goal of Constituent Relationship Management applications in nonprofit organizations is to improve communication with the various contact groups and at the same time to strengthen the material and non-material support of the respective organization or individual campaigns. In addition, the work of (voluntary) employees should be made easier. CiviCRM pursues these goals by offering functions around a central database for contact data and additional information, which map specific work areas of non-profit organizations. These include a .:

  • Member management and contact management with options for recording information and communication processes as well as for segmenting contacts
  • Communication tools, including a mailing module and the ability to send forms, etc. to include in websites or to publish data
  • Donation management
  • Event management
  • Management of service processes that can be customized as a sequence of contact-related activities
  • Campaign management
  • Reporting
  • Interlinking with content management systems in order to incorporate extended functions for visitors to the respective website

CiviCRM is fully or partially implemented in over 40 languages. In the German-speaking area, the association Software für Engagierte was founded in 2012 in the environment of Digitalcourage eV , which is exclusively dedicated to adapting CiviCRM for German users and to building a community.
