Drupal is a content management system (CMS) and framework . Drupal is mainly used in the organization of websites , currently (March 2019) in 1.9% of all websites with a market share of 3.4% in CMS according to W3Techs. It was originally designed by the Belgian computer scientist Dries Buytaert .
Drupal is free software and is under the GNU General Public License . It is written in PHP and uses MySQL / MariaDB (recommended), PostgreSQL (supported), SQLite (from 7.x), Oracle (via extension) or MSSQLServer (via extension) as the database system .
features
As with other content management systems (CMS), Drupal can be used to post and edit content on the Internet . Drupal differs from other CMS primarily through the implementation of social software approaches and thus supports the development of communities that work together on content and want to exchange and inform themselves about topics. For example, users can create their own weblogs , exchange ideas in forums or publish articles. A differentiated system of roles and rights is supported.
Drupal has been available as open source since 2001 . In the meantime, Drupal is used for several million websites of various kinds around the world, for example for the website of Duden and Harvard University , for reader comments on the website of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , or from 2009 to 2017 also for the White House Washington website .
In addition to other well-known CMS such as B. WordPress , Joomla and TYPO3 with its specific approach has established a place among the large PHP -based open source CMS. Drupal has a strong online community that actively supports its members. There are also companies in German-speaking countries that offer commercial support and develop professionally.
With Drush , a command line tool is available for maintenance tasks.
Drupal won the English Packt Publishing Open Source Content Management System Award in the "Overall Winner" category in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Structure and functions
Drupal consists of a core (German core ) that provides the basic functionality and modules provide additional functionality and the system can be added if required. At the moment (as of February 2017) a total of over 36,500 modules are managed on drupal.org. Of these, over 2,625 are marked as compatible with Drupal 8 and over 12,627 as compatible with Drupal 7. These modules offer a wide range of simple, common website functions, complex tools that can be configured using a graphical user interface, and extensions to the already extensive programming interfaces . About 2,500 "themes" allow a diverse graphic design of the website. Many of these themes offer the possibility of adapting your own themes.
Due to the modular structure of Drupal, there are many possible uses. The list ranges from “one-person websites” such as personal weblogs to online communities with thousands of members.
Possible areas of application for the CMS Drupal are described below:
Weblog
A single person can set up a weblog as the sole user of the CMS . However, it is also possible that several users share a website and each has their own weblog.
Online community
Online communities are websites where a large number of users, each with their own user account , are responsible for the design and content of the website. Articles can be created or discussed in a forum. An administrator and moderators are responsible for monitoring and ensuring that everything runs smoothly.
Books
The linking of pages in a linear structure is in hypertext problematic and CMS often. Here the content type “Book” at Drupal offers a simple possibility to write and manage coherent pages of a book (together) - without losing the overview.
Selected properties
- Strict separation of layout / design and functional source code
- Sophisticated taxonomy system for hierarchical categorization of content
- With content types, different types of pages can be built that can have different permissions.
- role-based rights system
- Versioning of the content
- Tree-like (English threaded ) comment options
- Permalinks - Each page is a fixed (not changing) URL accessible
- Clean URLs - Drupal can generate human and machine readable URLs (e.g. for search engines )
- Built-in full text search function
- Drupal can use different database systems ( MySQL version 5.5.3 or higher is recommended)
- Built-in caching mechanisms ensure good performance
- Numerous themes allow extensive customization of the layout
- Language settings (also multilingual sites) with the help of localization data
- Connection to LDAP server / authentication and OpenID
- Multisite capability: building isolated websites on one installation
- Override : Your own code adjustments / additions without core / module code changes, both for functions and for layout (themes).
- Hooks : The hook system makes it possible to interact with the Drupal core and other modules
Selected modules
Drupal can be expanded with a large number of so-called modules, so that you can "retrofit" almost any functionality.
- CCK module (CCK: Content Construction Kit, German "content kit"): Easy creation of your own content types (included in the core since Drupal 7)
- Views module: Easy creation of user-defined lists of content (modeling of SQL queries on a graphical user interface) (included in the core since Drupal 8)
- CKEditor / TinyMCE / WYSIWYG module: Simple WYSIWYG editing of articles (CKEditor included in the core since Drupal 8)
- Image module: Enables the publication of images and image galleries (included in the core since Drupal 7)
- Actions and workflow module: Creation of workflows and related actions
- Organic Groups Module: Allows the creation of any groups that users can join and then post content
- Event module: appointment management with calendar functions
- Location / Google Maps / OpenLayers module: Access to map material , distance calculation , diverse location of content, etc.
- Weblink module: Management of web links with link monitoring
- Ubercart / Commerce module: Extension for e-commerce
Community
The Drupal user and developer community comprises more than 1,100,000 user accounts registered on Drupal.org, of which more than 36,000 are developer accounts (as of November 20, 2014).
The DrupalCon (Drupal Conference) takes place twice a year, alternating between North America and Europe. While fewer than 50 people took part in the first DrupalCon (2005 in Antwerp ), the number of participants grew rapidly and 10 years later had 2039 participants in Barcelona and 3086 participants in Los Angeles . Attempts to establish DrupalCon on other continents ( Sydney, Australia 2013, Bogotá, Colombia 2015, Mumbai, India 2016) have so far not proven to be sustainable. With the aim of restructuring the resource-intensive organization of DrupalCon in Europe, the Drupal Association, as the organizer, suspended the European DrupalCon 2018. The European Drupal community did not accept the failure and organized a replacement conference in Darmstadt in September 2018 under the title Drupal Europe 2018.
There are many active Drupal forums, mailing lists, and discussion groups. There are also various IRC channels on the Freenode network.
There are 35 national Drupal communities ("communities") on drupal.org that offer language-specific help (as of November 23, 2014).
Name and logo
Drupal is a registered trademark of the native Belgian Dries Buytaert . He had originally intended to register the domain dorp.org for his self-programmed contact platform (Dorp is the Flemish word for village), but made a mistake and registered drop.org. In 2001 the software was released under the name Drupal. The name is the English-American spelling for the pronunciation of the Dutch word “druppel”, which means to drop in German ( Low German : “Dropp” or “Droppen” ).
The official logo has been the writing of the Drupal word mark since 2016.
The logo, which was official until 2016, is continued today as the "community logo": the so-called Druplicon . It was born from the idea of using a drop of water as a logo. This should, however, have a comic effect and be clearly recognizable. Therefore, two drops fused into one another, which look like an infinity symbol , represent the eyes in the face of the water drop. This is to symbolize the sheer endless possibilities of Drupal.
criticism
- Lack of backward compatibility: New major versions of Drupal are often only partially compatible with previous ones (e.g. major version 6 with 5, etc.). This means that existing modules have to be adapted and reprogrammed and may not initially be available when a new main version is released. The difficulties with upgrades between the major versions (e.g. between Drupal 6 and 7) resulting from sometimes massive API changes are sometimes heavily criticized. Migration tools are increasingly available to solve this problem. One of them is currently being integrated directly into the Drupal 8 core. B. to be able to import content from Drupal 6 directly.

Distributions and expansion packages
In some cases there are extensions that change the Drupal core massively, which have to be installed later or can also be part of a distribution (software) . There is also a standardized distribution option with installation profiles that do not contain any core changes.
Installation profiles in general
Drupal offers the possibility of maintaining installation profiles, in which a certain selection of additional modules, topics and special settings can be integrated, as independent projects. Such an installation profile is always based on a stable Drupal version and extends it with additional functionalities that are available from the start. This simplifies the otherwise time-consuming search for the required modules if a similar configuration is to be installed several times. Installation profiles are therefore suitable for creating your own compilation of frequently used modules and topics and also for publishing them. Many Drupal distributions offer the appropriate functions to create a special kind of website. For websites that are based on an installation profile, the entirety of all Drupal modules is also available for installation.
CiviCRM (extension)
CiviCRM is a Constituent Relationship Management System (not a Customer Relationship Management System) that is specially geared towards the needs of non-governmental organizations , associations and non-profit institutions. There are modules for managing different types of contacts (not just customers), donations, events and members. It uses Drupal, Joomla or WordPress as a substructure.
Lightning
By Acquia developed distribution Lightning (formerly Acquia Drupal) is characterized by commercial support and is aimed at the scope of the "Enterprise Authoring".
Open atrium
Open Atrium is a complete intranet solution that can be used to coordinate and optimize teamwork. It contains blog, calendar, documents and todo lists. Open Atrium is based on Drupal Version 6. Version 2.0 was created on the basis of Drupal 7.
Pressflow (extension)
Pressflow is based on the current Drupal version, but focuses on improved performance and more sophisticated caching mechanisms. The API compatibility is fully retained. However, the higher performance is at the expense of downward compatibility: Instead of PHP 4 and several database systems, Pressflow only supports PHP 5 and MySQL 5.x.
Pressflow improves the following properties:
- Function simulation: Up to version 6, Drupal uses functions from PHP version 4.x. Modern functions, as they are only supported by PHP from version 5.x, have been reproduced in Drupal, so that the compatibility with PHP 4 is maintained. Pressflow breaks with this compatibility and uses the native PHP 5 functions instead.
- Optimization of the MySQL connection: Drupal can be operated with different database systems: This variety is at the expense of performance, as many MySQL-specific functions cannot be used. Pressflow only supports MySQL and is therefore able to deal with the special features of this database system and to use special (faster) MySQL functions that are not available in other database systems.
- More sophisticated caching: Especially websites with massive user traffic, caching helps to reduce the server load considerably. Pressflow supports caching by means of reverse proxy , which, in contrast to the database-based caching options from Drupal, should reduce the server load by a factor of 10.
Pressflow was developed for Drupal 6, a version of the extension for Drupal 7 can be found on Github. Pressflow is no longer available for Drupal 8.
